Michael Kavanagh was elected to the Council of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA Ireland) in 2018.

Michael is currently Director of the Department of Professional Practice with KPMG Ireland and a Board member of the Carmichael Centre. Prior to that he acted as Chief Executive and was Head of Financial Reporting Supervision with IAASA (Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority). He established Ireland's statutory accounting enforcement function and oversaw the establishment of Ireland's statutory Audit Inspection regime.

He was the Irish Observer at the Corporate Reporting Council of the FRC which produces UK and Irish accounting standards. He was also Ireland's representative at ESMA's European Enforcers Co-ordination Sessions which is tasked with coordinating accounting enforcement across Europe and chaired a number of their sub-committees.

In the past, Michael has been a member of numerous CPA committees and chaired the Institute's Financial Reporting Committee.  He has acted in the past as examiner, lecturer, solution writer and moderator for a number of accountancy bodies’ professional exams and was a frequent presenter on auditing and accounting matters at accountancy body Continuing Professional Development events.
