The 2008 recession marked the beginning of the accountancy skills shortage in Ireland. Initiatives put in place by government such as critical skills permit have done little to close this growing skills gap.
Now in 2020, the future of the accounting profession has been threatened further by the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 70% of employers now find it difficult to supervise and mentor trainees in a remote environment and a substantial number of graduates have been left without training opportunities as social distancing rules have forced employment offers off the table. If graduates are unable to train, where will our future accountants come from?
To avert an even greater future shortage of talent within the accountancy profession, employers will need to implement an effective trainee management strategy.
