Message to Students on Proposed Amalgamation

This message was sent to all students on Wednesday 21 February 2024

As you are aware, CPA Ireland held an Extraordinary General Meeting today to vote on the proposed amalgamation with Chartered Accountants Ireland. Chartered Accountants Ireland also held a Special General Meeting to vote on the same proposal.

The voting has now closed, and I can confirm that both CPA Ireland and Chartered Accountants Ireland voted in favour of the proposed amalgamation.

Work will now proceed to implement the results of our members vote. We will be engaging with Chartered Accountants Ireland on the details of the amalgamation process and securing the legal and regulatory consents needed to create a single Irish-based accountancy body and the largest professional body on the island of Ireland.

Throughout this process CPA Ireland has been aware of how this process may impact upon our students and sought to reassure our students about the priority this issue has been given.

At the amalgamation date, students with only Strategic Level subjects to pass will continue to avail of the current CPA Ireland programme arrangements which will run up to the August 2027 examinations. On completing their studies and the required experience requirements these students will be eligible to apply for membership of Chartered Accountants Ireland as a Chartered Accountant and to also avail of the CPA designation.

At amalgamation date, students at the Foundation or Professional Levels will be able to opt into the Chartered Accountants Ireland qualification programme. Post amalgamation, the CPA Ireland programme at these levels will not be offered. In preparing for this amalgamation a mapping exercise has been undertaken to determine the equivalent Chartered Accounting Ireland syllabus subjects to the CPA Ireland examinations. Based on this mapping students will be advised of the equivalent Chartered Accountants Ireland subjects remaining to be completed at CAP1 and CAP2 and, also the study options to enable them to successfully complete the Chartered Accountants Ireland system.

At amalgamation date, students with some of the Strategic Level subjects passed and some remaining Professional Level subjects to pass will also be able to avail of CPA Ireland programme arrangements for the Strategic Level up to August 2027. They will be required to pass the Chartered Accountants Ireland subject(s) equivalent to the outstanding CPA Ireland subject(s) and the remaining Strategic Level subjects. We will advise each of these students of their options.

We will communicate with each of you as we proceed over the next few weeks and months to make this amalgamation as smooth as possible for all our students. You will be advised of the finalised arrangements, their relevance to you, and the opportunities for you.
